Our trip started with 3 nights in Los Angeles, a large and sprawling city which is surprisingly easy to see on a budget and without a car. We stayed in the Hotel Hollywood in Yucca Street which, although sounds glamerous and is located just off Hollywood Boulevard is a clean and comfortable modest budget accommodation.
We walked a pleasant 2.7 miles from the hotel to the Griffith Observatory, walking along Franklin Avenue into Griffith Park where we followed a moderately steep sandy track up into the hills. The Observatory gave us an awesome view of LA and the famous Hollywood sign.
From the Observatory we made our way via the Hollywood Western red line metro to Downtown where we disembarked at Union Station in search of Olvera Street where LA, the City of Angels began in the 1800’s. We found this area to be a little disappointing and didn’t get a real feel of the buzzing Mexican vibe we were anticipating so we walked towards the Civic art district and the Disney Concert Hall with its architectural design which is said to resemble Marilyn Monroes billowing skirt!
A fabulous Thai dinner at a small locals eat-in/take away topped the day off nicely and all for only $9.50 (about £6.40) each.
