Snowdonia: Precipice Walk

Start of the walk (from the car park)

A short, easy 5 km circular walk with spectacular views

The weather forecast was looking good and with the anticipation of clear skies and sunshine today was the perfect day for the Precipice Walk which promised panoramic views of southern Snowdonia.

Taking two cars again we drove for about 10 miles to the start of the walk not far from Dolgellau LL40 2NG (you can just put ‘Precipice Walk’ in google maps) and parked in the free car park.

Edge of Lake Cynwch

Following signs for ‘Precipice Walk’ along a lovely green shaded pathway we walked for 15 minutes or so until we came to the edge of Lake Cynwch.

We walked half way round Lake Cynwch lake before turning right directly up a grassy slope to the start of the precipice.

Llyn Cynwch

Llyn Cynwch is a working reservoir which provides the nearby town of Dolgellau with water.

Grassy slope towards the precipice

Having walked through a gate the path narrowed and we followed each other in a line as the incredible views across the estuary soon opened up.

Walking along the ledge

Much of the circular walk around the precipice was along a ledge where we were all walking in single file. The path was rocky and uneven so you would need to ensure you have suitable footwear.

Blueberries

There are several grassy picnic spots along the trail and if you want to do some foraging we found lots of wild blueberries growing!

Looking north towards Snowdonia National Park

The path was 800 ft above sea level and all of the way around the precipice we could see miles and miles of amazing views.

This was a relatively easy walk and as much of the height is gained by driving the car up to the high car park we felt a bit like we had cheated! We had gained the rewards of fantastic views and without much effort on this occasion.

Full details of this walk can be found on the Gov Wales website.

Sweet potato vegan pie

We finished the walk with a glass of wine and dinner in the nearby George III pub which is located on the banks of the Mawddach Estuary.

Summary

This is a fairly short and easy walk of under 6 km and would be a good choice for families. We were also incredibly lucky with the weather again today! The forecast the previous day had been for heavy rain but this changed and we were fortunate to have sun for the entire day which really did showcase this most beautiful of walks.
