The Kuang Si Waterfalls and Bear Sanctuary are located 28 km outside of Luang Prabang and can easily be reached by tuk tuk (pick-up) or by hiring a moped. It is also possible to hike to them as part of an organised trip. The cost for a tuk tuk van taxi is around £20-25 for the return trip. The entry cost to the waterfalls is 20,000 KIP (around £2) each.

Water cascades into the turquoise ponds where there are designated swimming areas. Locals swim fully clothed and as we visited during the Songkran celebrations many families started to arrive laden with large picnic baskets. There is also a large number of stalls selling food and drinks.

The Bear Sanctuary is located inside the grounds of the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Asiatic black bears are the victims of illegal hunters who capture and use them in the traditional medicine trade. There are around 20 bears which have been rescued and are now looked after by the sanctuary. The Bear Sanctuary does not receive any amount of the entry cost to the waterfalls but instead relies on donations and the sale of its products.

We enjoyed watching the bears playing as one managed to successfully turf another out of the hammock!
